Materials Engineer

John Deere Power Systems is seeking to fill a Materials Engineer position within the Materials Engineering Department. The position is day shift and is located in Waterloo, IA. This position serves as support to Machining and Assembly Business Units, Quality, Engine Engineering, Supply Management and Field Service Support.
Position Responsibilities:
- Crankshaft process control, which includes various aspects of induction heat-treat process control and review of production results, destructive testing and disposition of suspect material as well as continuous improvement activities.
- Support and oversee crankshaft Magnetic Particle Testing and electrolytic acid etching processes. Support includes operator
- training, audits, disposition of suspect material and continuous improvement activities.
- Work requests originating from field failure analysis, Engine Works production/engine audit non-conformances and Product Engineering
- Center failure analysis (fatigue testing, life tests, etc.).
- Determine Root Cause analysis and recommends corrective actions.
- Various manufacturing process engineer responsibilities as applicable to those associated to Materials Engineering.
- Identifies and implements process improvements that support strategic initiatives including cost reduction and quality improvements. May
- lead continuous improvement teams on relatively simple or complex processes.
Education
- Bachelors in Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or other applicable Engineering discipline.
- Master’s in Metallurgical/Materials Engineering a plus but not required.
- Required Skills and Experience
- Induction heat-treatment and associated tooling/components.
- Experience with engines. Experience with diesel engines a plus.
- Destructive and non-destructive testing techniques and material evaluation. MPI preferred.
- Strong skill-set with ferrous metallurgy.
- Metallography sample preparation and equipment.
- Fluent with reading and interpreting steel and cast iron microstructures.
- Strong mechanical aptitude.
- Experience with planning, organizing and implementing of engineering projects.
- Factory/manufacturing experience.
- Mid-level failure analysis experience.
- Experience working in a multi-functional, high performance, team-based work group.
- Skills and understanding of complex suite of engineering (electronic) tools and manufacturing technology.
Desired Skills and Experience
- Magnetic particle testing. (ASNT Level I Operator Certification).
- Working knowledge with SAP.
- Six Sigma experience. Green Belt Certification.
- Knowledge of drawing and schematic interpretation, product models,
- Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
